TO THE QUESTION OF TEACHER’S ROLE IN THE SYSTEM OF MASSIVE OPEN ON-LINE COURSES

Abstract

The article focuses on the issues of a teacher’s identity and role in a new educational sphere: massive open on-line courses (MOOC). The majority of MOOC used for training and academic research purposes in higher education treat the teacher as a facilitator, meanwhile the aspect of a teacher’s academic identity and methods of teaching tend to be disregarded. The article discusses two types of MOOC courses (xMOOC and cMOOC) which differ not only in targets and structure of teaching material presentation, but also in the degree of formal assessment of student’s performance, and consequently, in teacher’s involvement in the educational process as well as his\her role in it. Both types of the discussed MOOC courses have common problematic areas related to the teacher’s role: monitoring students’ educational activity by the teacher, feedback from the teacher and teacher’s knowledge of information technologies.
